The Story Behind The Name

Dolphin was formed in 2001 and became incorporated in British Columbia in 2007.

The name was inspired by a book called 'The Strategy of the Dolphin' written by Dudley Lynch and Paul Kordis.

It's only one of many thinking tools we use to help our clients but one of our favourites.

The gist of it is this…

You can divide the world of individuals and companies into three basic types: carp, shark and dolphin.

Organisations need all three types to function.

No one type is necessarily more intelligent or desirable than another, although each species has clearly distinguishable traits.

The species aren't distributed in equal proportions.

As you read the descriptions you will automatically think of people you know…

Carp are bottom feeders.

They like the security of a safe, predictable world with an abundant food supply. They prefer the security of safety in numbers to swimming alone.

They can survive in relatively murky, still waters with low oxygen quite happily.

Older, wiser carp evolve highly developed skills to keep themselves in the middle of the school, close to the best food source and furthest away from predators.

At their best they are diligent, trustworthy, well-organised, reliable and highly-prized (as with Koi carp).

Carp can lead long, secure, happy and productive lives this way.

Sharks are hunters.

By nature, they are sleek, highly evolved and extremely efficient predators.

They are territorial and solitary at heart (although they assemble and jostle in packs).

When food is abundant they can be docile and approachable. When it's a little harder to find, posture and threat is often enough to get what they want. When it becomes scarce or more competitive they become more aggressive.

At their best, sharks are action-oriented achievers that seek challenge and gain reward.

Their natural prey is carp, but if needs must they'll turn on their own kind, the strongest and fittest surviving.

Big, wise old sharks have few natural enemies and can retain an air of docility even in hard times – until another big, wise old shark happens along.

Dolphins are inventive, playful masters of their universe.

They are collaborative and nurturing. Unlike the other two species, which look to change the environment to suit themselves, dolphins look to create better environments in which all three species coexist harmoniously.

They search beyond win-win situations for win-to-themultiple-power solutions that improve the lives of all – and the bigger environment.

Because they are naturally inquisitive and creative, dolphins are most often the ones who find solutions. They use tools to help them. They are comfortable alone, in pairs or in large schools and can inter-change freely between these according to need.

There is one skill dolphins have that the other two don't. Dolphins can temporarily metamorphose to become a carp or a shark if the situation merits it, before returning to their natural dolphin state. This enables them to empathise with and benefit from the traits of the other two.
